An amazing ride as you climb up to the top of Mt. This is a new road with big sweepers and great views as you climb to the top of the mountains to go to the old mining town (and now with small stakes gambling) of Central City; the road through Central City is small and narrow and will drop you down to Blackhawk (another old mining town with gambling now).

A great ride that follows the high peaks to the west, providing fantastic views and great riding; Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park; a good tourist town with some nice shops and several good restaurants.  If you get there in the afternoon, you can check into a hotel and then do some riding into the park as desired (take US-36 and ride into the Park, perhaps taking the road up to Bear Lake (beautiful) and then on up to the intersection with US-34, taking US-34 back down into the other Fall River Valley and back to Estes Park (makes for a nice loop in the evening when the wildlife are out -- watch for Elk, Bear, and Big Horn Sheep in-particular).

Nothing exciting along this short jaunt.

Lodging in Montrose for four nights; I suggest the Best Western Red Arrow Motel in Montrose.  I use this for our Rockies-Gold rallies and Shelly, the manager, treats us really well.  Tell Shelly or the other staff that we recommended his place.

Montrose will serve as your launching point for three days of rides, thus allowing you to unpack and not carry all of your things each day.  We do our High Country Cruisers Rally/Gathering there most years and find it to be one of the best spots for several days of riding in Colorado.

Day 4:  Colorado National Monument and Grand Mesa Loop ~210 miles

[click map for larger view]

I highly recommend that you do this loop with Colorado National Monument in the morning and Grand Mesa in the afternoon.  It can get very hot at the Monument, so in the morning it will be cooler, plus the sun will be to you back for better photography of the monument and will also not be in your eyes.  Grand Mesa is at a much higher elevation and will be cooler in the heat of the afternoon.  This trip provides for some gorgeous riding along the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway, and the Colorado National Monument (admission required).

bullet

US-50 west to Grand Junction ~62 miles
bullet

Mostly 4-lane with some sweepers.

bullet

Left on CO-340 for about one mile to Glade Park Road.

bullet

Left on Glade Park Road to Colorado National Monument and the Rim Drive to Fruita ~30 miles
bullet

One of Colorado's more hidden spots as most folks just whip through Grand Junction on I-70; Colorado National Monument provides unique views of Red Rock erosion and views of the Grand Valley below (once upon a time this was the Grand vs. Colorado River); the Rim Drive is a nice, slow road with lots of twisties; be sure to stop at the

You might want to stop at the Horizon Drive exit in Grand Junction for a bite of lunch; several restaurants readily available.

bullet

bullet

Grand Mesa is another one of Colorado's more hidden spots and is the largest flat-top mesa in the world.  It will be much cooler at the top, which you will undoubtedly appreciate; take a side trip to the Grand Mesa Lodge and enjoy some of the sights in this area, eventually dropping down through the town of Cedaredge.

Day 5:  Unaweep Canyon (Uncompaghre) Loop ~235 miles

[click map for larger view]

(Unaweep/Tebeguache Scenic Byway)

This loop takes you north out of Montrose through Delta and on to Whitewater where you'll then head southwest on Highway 141 around the west side of the Uncompahgre Plateau to Placerville and then back to Montrose.

This route takes you through some of the lesser traveled of Colorado’s roads and scenery, particularly the Unaweep/Tebeguache Scenic Byway.  With great riding through the wide-open Unaweep Canyon early on, you’ll eventually end-up with narrow canyon riding more reminiscent of Utah.  After a stop at the Delores & San Miguel River overlook, you’ll head into Uranium mining country, stopping for lunch in Naturita.  As you head south you’ll cross high-plateau ranch country as you approach the San Juan Mountains, finally crossing Dallas Divide with its fantastic views of Mt. Sneffels and the San Juan Mountains.

bullet

Montrose US-50 west to Whitewater ~52 miles
bullet

You will have ridden this way the day before.

bullet

CO-141 south to Gateway and on to Naturita ~95 miles
bullet

Just an awesome ride as you climb into the higher plateau and valley, with twisties giving way to sweepers as you drop down into Gateway; after Gateway you follow the Delores River Canyon with sheer red cliffs and lots of sweeping turns; be sure and stop at the overlook for the Hanging Flume after you exit the River Canyon (it will be on your right); ride through some of the Uranium mining country and then stop for lunch in Naturita.

bullet

Colorado Scenic Byways Byways Unaweep-Tabeguache

bullet

CO-141 south to CO-145 to Placerville ~36 miles
bullet

Easy riding out of Naturita; in a few miles CO-141 ends and you will be on CO-145 (continue straight and do not turn right on CO-145 west to Utah), continuing to Redvale, eventually dropping down off the plateau to follow the San Miguel River to Placerville (lots of nice twisties).

bullet

CO-62 east to Ridgeway and US-50 ~23 miles
bullet

A beautiful ride as you climb from Placerville on CO-62, with lots of large sweeping turns as you climb to the top of Dallas Divide; stop at the pull off on the right at the top of the Divide for great views of Mt. Sneffels and the San Juan Mountains to the south ; continue down from the Divide to Ridgeway and US-550.

Dallas Divide, Colorado

bullet

US-550 north to Montrose ~28 miles

Day 6:  Crawford and Black Canyon North Rim Loop ~165 miles

[click map for larger view]

(West Elk Scenic Byway)

This loop takes you over to Blue Mesa Reservoir then north on Highway 92 to Crawford, home of Joe Cocker's Mad Dog Ranch Fountain Cafe (unfortunately the Cafe is closed, but the gift shop is open and is worth a stop). After spending some time in Crawford you head further north on Highway 92 to Delta and then back south into Montrose.

If you do the reverse of this ride and head to Crawford first, then head on to Highway 92.  Enjoy the ride along the North Rim of the Gunnison River (do not turn off for the North Rim of the National Park as it is an unpaved road).  Several nice pull-offs (be sure and stop at the turnoffs and, for the one at the east end, walk along the trail for some great views) and overlooks provide spectacular views of the Gunnison River Canyon.  After crossing Blue Mesa Dam, head west on US-50 towards Montrose.  About five miles east of Montrose you can take the right turn to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.  Enjoy the drive along the Rim Road, and for real excitement, take the short, STEEP road to the bottom of the Canyon (turn right just past the park entrance station).

bullet

Montrose US-50 west to Delta ~22 miles

bullet

Delta CO-92 to Hotchkiss ~20 miles

bullet

Hotchkiss CO-92 to Crawford to North Rim Black Canyon to Blue Mesa Dam and US-50 ~55 miles
bullet

This is an awesome ride, so take you time and enjoy.  The Mad Dog Cafe (Joe Cocker) in Crawford is closed, but the store should be open (usually some nice stuff) .  Continue on to the North Rim of the Black Canyon (do not take the turn-off for the entrance to the NP as the roads on the north side are not paved); CO-92 will following the rim, twisting in and out.  Be sure and stop at the various overlooks, walking out to the rim on those that have trails -- the views are worth the short hikes .  Drop down to Blue Mesa Dam.

bullet

Colorado Scenic Byways Byways West Elk

bullet

US-50 west over Blue Mesa Summit and Cero Summit to the turnoff for Black Canyon National Park ~30 miles

bullet

CO-347 into Black Canyon NP, climbing to the top of the rim of the canyon, then return to US-50 ~24 miles round trip
bullet

Awesome views and some short trails on the main part of the park -- these roads are paved.  The Rim Road is very nice and go all the way to the end.  Also, immediately past the entrance station to the park (where you pay your fee) there is a road that goes down to the Gunnison River in the bottom of the canyon -- be sure and take this down .  NOTE:  It has 15% grades, but the Wing handles them well -- just watch for the temperature gauge to possibly climb as you come up out of the canyon as the speeds are slow.

bulletPlacerville CO-145 south/east to Telluride ~16 miles
bullet

Although the road heads south just before Telluride, ride on up into Telluride and have breakfast here.  A really nice old mining town with lots of nice shops.  Ride on through town into the box canyon to get a better view of the waterfalls.  Return back through town and then head south on CO-145 towards Rico and Delores.

bulletTelluride CO-145 south to Delores ~74 miles
bullet

Nice mountain ride with lots of twisties and sweepers ; about ten miles from Telluride, Trout Lake on the left provides some awesome views and is good for a few photographs; continue on to the top of Lizard Head Pass (also good for a stop and some great photos); continue on through the small town of Rico and dropping down to Delores.

bulletDelores to Cortez via CO-145 (~10 miles), then via US-160 east to Mesa Verde National Park (~9 miles)
bullet

Time should allow you to ride into Mesa Verde and see some of the Indian cliff dwellings -- stop at the Visitor Center in the park to decide which dwellings you might want to tour (you have to get tickets for a couple of the best ones, particularly Cliff Palace ) -- the road in and out of the park to the primary ruins is ~50 miles roundtrip.

Beautiful ride with lots of sweepers through treed areas over the Pagosa.  As you start up Wolf Creek Pass stop at the rest area on the right and take a look at the waterfall.

bulletSouth Fork CO-149 north via the Rio Grande Valley to Creed to Lake City to Blue Mesa Reservoir and US-50 ~117 miles
bullet

This is another one of my favorite rides, with lots of sweepers following the Rio Grande River.  Turn off the main route and ride up into Creed , continuing through town to the end of the paved road to get some great views of the mountains and some old mining equipment.  Continue back on CO-149.  After you leave the Rio Grande and start climbing, stop at the rest area on the left for a view of the Rio Grand Pyramid (peak) in the distance beyond the Rio Grande River Valley .  After cresting the hill and heading down take the turn to the right for the overlook for Clear Creek Falls (much more impressive that you might expect) .  Continue on up to the top of Slumgullion Pass, and then stopping past the crest to take the turnoff for the Slumgullion Slide overlook (great views of the slide area and looking down into Lake City) .  Continue on down into Lake City, probably stopping here for a nice lunch (this is a small town).  Then continue on with twisties and sweepers as you approach the Gunnison River and Blue Mesa Reservoir .  A great ride!

These are backcountry roads with little traffic as you approach Pikes Peak from the west -- great views of the Peak.

bulletCR-1 south to Cripple Creek ~9 miles
bullet

Small stakes gambling in some of the old buildings that have been turned into casinos .  Sorta neat.  From here you can also take the road over to Victor (about 8 miles) to see one of the old mining towns in its original form.  Nice ride over to Victor also.

bulletCripple Creek CO-67 north to Divide ~18 miles
bullet

As you climb up CO-67 out of Cripple Creek watch for the Molly Kathleen Mine on the right near the top.  They give tours of the mine.  You drop down a shaft in the miner's cage for 1000 feet below the surface.  It is a little crowded in the cage, but the gold mine tunnels when you get off the cage are pretty roomy with lots of headroom.  This has become a very enjoyable and informative tour with demos of the various mining equipment from various eras, plus a ride on an air-powered tram through part of the mine.  Not good if you are claustrophobic, but it is a very good tour and worth the price.
